Baltal Jurinea is a perennial stemless herb which is
named for the Baltal valley in Kashmir.
It is very similar to
Himalayan Jurinea in general
appearance but differs from it by its entire to irregularly lobed leaf
blade against pinnately cut leaves. Leaves are ovate to elliptic ovate,
rounded at the base, 13-16 x 5-7 cm, entire to irregularly lobed,
toothed, upper surface woolly, lower surface densely woolly, stalked.
Leaf-stalks 3-10 cm long, woolly, sometimes sheathing at the base.
Flower-heads are numerous, 7-24 in number, 1.5-2.2 x 0.5-1.5 cm,
disc-like, flower-cluster-stalk up to 5 cm. Involucral bracts are in
many rows, tapering, ovate-lanceshaped, overlapping. Florets are
tubular, pinkish-purple, up to 1.5 cm long. Staminal filaments
hairless; anthers arrow shaped, tails lacerate. Baltal Jurinea is
endemic to Jammu & Kashmir. It grows on rocky slopes above meadows, at
altitudes of 3000-3500 m.
