Common name: Bat Flower, Cat's Whiskers, Devil Flower
Botanical name: Tacca chantrieri Family: Taccaceae (bat flower family)
Bat flower or Devil Flower is native to Southeast Asia. The
purple-black flower looks somewhat like a flying bat, a sinister face or a
mean cat with lots of whiskers. Bat flower is bat-like in color, shape and
quite a complex plant with interesting side bracts of dark shiny green and
white leaves. After flowering, berries are produced. Taccas have beautiful
foliage and one of the most interesting flower ever seen. However, they can be
picky sometimes regarding their environmental conditions. When they like the
conditions, they grow, flower a lot, and even produce babies. When something
is not right, they slowly decline and eventually die.
