Cast-Iron Plant is an evergreen, clump-forming
perennial with tough rhizomes growing just beneath the surface of the
soil. It has a reputation for withstanding neglect, inspiring its
common name. The rhizomes produce broad, dark glossy green, leathery,
elliptic-lanceshaped leaves up to 60 cm long, with long leaf-stalks and
pronounced parallel veins running along their length. Flower appear at
ground level, 3-4 cm across, cup-shaped and fleshy. The outside of the
flower is cream colored, with a rich burgundy and pink interior.
Cast-Iron Plant is native to Japan, cultivated elsewhere.
