Common name: Coelogyne Orchid
Botanical name: Coelogyne nitida Family: Orchidaceae (orchid family)
Evergreen, epiphytic orchid, with lance-shaped, dark green leaves, (12 inches
long) 1 inch white flowers, with yellow/orange lip markings, appear on
racemes from spring through early summer. Should be grown in epiphytic orchid
potting mix, or slatted baskets. Requires moderate to high humidity, along
with good ventilation and bright filtered light in summer. In winter, allow to
dry between waterings, and provide full light. The scientific name is derived
from the Greek words koilos (hollow) and gyne (woman), referring to the
concave stigma. This genus lacks the saccate base of the labellum, a typical
characteristic which is present in the other genera in the subtribe
Coelogyninae. The free lip has high lateral lobes along the basal part of the
labellum (hypochile) and smooth, toothed or warty keels. They have often a
sweet scent, attracting different kinds of pollinators, such as bees, wasps
and beetles.
