Common Lilac is an upright shrub, up to 6 m tall.
Leaves are oval, somewhat heart-shaped or tapering at the base,
tapering, 5-10 cm long, 2-6 cm broad, somewhat leathery, bright green,
hairless; leaf-stalk 2 cm. Large flower panicles arise from lateral
buds, without leaves at the base, end bud suppressed. Flowers are often
scented, lilac, white, azure, or red, sometimes double.Flower tube is
narrowly cylindric, about 1 cm long, petals 4, oval, more or less
rounded, hoodlike at the tip. Anthers don't protrude out. Sepal-cup is
2 mm long, 4-toothed, powdery, glandular-ciliolate on margin. Capsule
is smooth, lustrous, brown, 1-1.5 cm long, 5 mm in diameter, slightly
compressed. Common Lilac is native to Europe, cultivated elsewhere.
