Common name: Compact Deutzia
Botanical name: Deutzia compacta Family: Hydrangeaceae (Hydrangea family)
Compact Deutzia is a deciduous shrub, 2-3 m tall. Flowers are white, or
sometimes pinkish, fragrant, 1.2-1.8 cm across, borne in compact clusters
on long lateral branches. Petals are obovate, 5-8 mm, which overlap when the
flower is not fully open. Flowers have a set of outer stamens and a set of
inner stamens. The outer ones have flat broad filaments, giving the
impression of the inner stamens being surrounded by a frilly cup.
Leaves are ovate-lance-shaped, 5-12 cm long, with
minutely toothed margins. Leaves are green above and below. Compact Deutzia
is found in the Himalayas, from Kashmir to SW China, at altitudes of
2100-3300 m. Flowering: June-July.
