Nile Tulip Tree is an evergreen small tree, 4-5 m in height in cultivation,
although reaches more than 10 m in its native region.
It was named in the honor of botanist C. Robert Markham
(1830-1916), who worked in India.
Leaves are compound, 20-30 cm long, normally clustered
towards the ends of the branches. Glossy dark green leaflets
are 5–9 per stalk. Flowers are borne in branch-end
clusters. They are trumpet shaped, yellow in color, with
orange-reddish spots in the throat, measuring 5-6 cm in length. Fruit is a
capsule, of up to 70 cm in length, with abundant winged seeds.
