Common name: Pink powder puff
Botanical name: Calliandra schultzei 'Rose Cascade' Family: Mimosaceae (Touch-me-not Family)
Both their common name, powder puff, and scientific name, Calliandra
(which means "beautiful stamens"), are appropriate for the more than 150
tropical plant species that make up the Calliandra genus. The trees and shrubs
have flowers of densely packed, silky pink or white stamens that look like
powder puffs. This particular variety of calliandra, the schultzii , is unique
for its striking blooms that are both white and pink. This one flowers
throughout the year. Interesting enough the leaves close at night.
The powder puff flowers are attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds.
The buds before the flowers open look like raspberries.
This large shrub can be grown indoor if trimmed and grown in a pot but it will
be best if you can grow it outside in a warm climate.
