Rhynchoglossum scabrum - Rough-Leaf Tongue-Lip

Rough-Leaf Tongue-Lip is an erect, fleshy annual herb, 5-50 cm tall; stems branched, round, 1.5-5 mm in diameter. Flowers are 1.1-2 x 0.4-1.1 cm, strongly zygomorphic, hairless. Flower tube is 5.5-8 mm, white; upper lip 1-2 x 2-4 mm, blue to dark blue; lower lip 4.5-11 x 4.5-12 mm, blue to dark blue, trifid or tongue-like, without a yellow spot. Stamens are 4, filaments 1.8-2.4 x 0.15-0.25 mm; style 2-2.8 mm. Sepal-cup is lanceshaped to obovate, 5.8-6.3 x 2.5-3.5 mm, winged, with 5 triangular to pointed sepals 1.8-2.3 mm long. Flowers are borne in spreading racemes at branch-ends, 2.5-30 cm and lateral 2-5 cm long, sometimes drooping, 10-40-flowered; flower-cluster-stalks 1-14 cm long. Bracts are 2-5 mm, bracteoles 1.2-2.8 mm, and flower-stalks 1-4 mm long. Leaves are simple, alternate, with swollen nodes; leaf-stalks 5-12 mm green to pale purple. Blades ovate to elliptic, 1.5-14 x 0.5-8 cm, membranous to almost leathery, pale green, pointed to tapering, strongly asymmetric at base, rough above and hairless below; margins entire; venation penninerved. Capsules are ovoid, 4-6 x 1-2 mm, enclosed by the sepal-cup. Rough-Leaf Tongue-Lip is endemic to Peninsular India. Flowering: August-October.
