Common name: Tanjore Heterostemma
Botanical name: Heterostemma tanjorense Family: Asclepiadaceae (Milkweed family)
Tanjore Heterostemma is a perennial vine commonly found in
sandy places in Tanjore district of Tamil Nadu. The botanical genus name
Heterostemma comes from Heteros meaning variable and
stemma meaning crown. This probably refers to the different colors
of the crown of stamens seen in these plants. Oppositely arranged leaves
are broad, ovate or oblong, with a short tip, obtuse or heart-shaped at the
base. Flowers appear in few-flowered clusters on peduncles which are
shorter than the leaf stalks. The flowers have almost no flower-tube - they
are like wheels, which 5 petals. The crown of stamens is five-leaved. The
"leaflets" of the crown of stamens are spreading outwards. Fruit is a pod
containing several seeds (follicle), which is thin, hairless and hooked at
the tip. Flowering: August-September.
