Botanical name: Quercus lanata Family: Fagaceae (Beech family)
Woolly Leaved Oak is a large or medium-sized evergreen tree, found in the
Himalayan region, from Uttarakhand to Arunachal Pradesh, at altitudes of
1400-2400 m. It is distinguished by its leaves which are dark shiny green
above and dull rusty colored, and woolly-haired beneath. The young shoots
are also covered with rust colored hairs. Leaves are elliptic-lancelike,
leathery, prominently toothed, 8-15 cm long. Male flowers spikes (catkins)
are woolly haired. Fruits occur either singly or in pairs. Nut is oblong,
to 1.5 cm, half enclosed in a woody cup which has numerous oblong bracts.
Flowering: April-May.
