Common name: European Starflower, Garden Star-of-Bethlehem, Grass lily, Nap-at-noon, Eleven-o'clock lady
Botanical name: Ornithogalum umbellatum    Family: Asparagaceae (Asparagus family)

European Starflower is a perennial herb, dying back after flowering, to an underground storage bulb. Initially the plant forms 6-10 basal leaves, that arise in clusters from the bulbs. The leaves are grooved, hairless and linear with a white to light green linear midrib on the upper surface, and grow up to 30 cm long and 8 mm broad. Flowers are borne atop a hairless flower stem that emerges from the leaf clusters later and is about 10-30 cm tall, tapering at its tip. Each stem bears 10-20 starry white flowers, each up to 2 cm wide, in an open, umbel-like, terminal cluster. Flowers are striped green on the outside. Flowers open near noon and close at sunset or in cloudy weather. European Starflower is native to Europe, cultivated elsewhere.
