Heartleaf Pimpinel is an erect herb, 40-75 cm tall,
stems simple below, branched above; stem and branches round, faintly
striped, often reddish-purple tinged, hairless, young parts thinly
velvet-hairy. Basal leaves are ovate, heart-shaped. Lower stem leaves
are pinnately 3-foliolate; lateral leaflets simple or secondarily
pinnately trifoliate. Leaf-stalks are 3-6 cm long, sheathing, sparsely
fringed with hairs on margins. Leaflets are 2.6 x 0.8-3.2 cm, ovate to
ovate-lanceshaped, sparsely hairy, sharply sawtoothed; leaflet-stalks
0.4-2.0 cm long, hairless or so; secondary leaflets of lateral leaflets
stalkless; upper leaves often cut into numerous, linear segments or
reduced to sheaths. Flowers are dull white, borne in branch-end
compound umbels. Primary rays are 10-15, 1.0-3.5 cm long, hairless or
nearly so, slender, flower-cluster-stalks 2.5-8.0 cm long. Fruits are
0.2 cm long, ovoid, pellucid-granulate. Heartleaf Pimpinel is endemic
to Peninsular India. Flowering: November-February.
